It is very difficult to give even an approximate estimation of the amazing wealth of stories, images, icons, graphic styles and artistry the comic has produced in over a century of its history. However the Sanremo Art & Comics show, which this year celebrates its first edition in the prestigious setting of the Palafiori, at least does try to provide an idea, and to do this has fielded the passion and the expertise of professionals who are among the most appreciated in their respective areas of work.
Passion and skill that has resulted in the mounting of seven great exhibitions, curated by Sergio Pignatone and Giuseppe Pollicelli, each one trying to illustrate as fully as possible one of the components that make up the immense mosaic of the comic, a form of expression that has contributed a great deal to intellectual history and contemporary society but whose cultural relevance – despite indisputable steps taken recently – is still not fully understood and recognized. Sanremo Art & Comics wants to make its contribution to this process of legitimization, and the main way it aims to do this is with these seven large retrospectives, each of which focuses on a different aspect of the art of comics.
From Diabolik to DK. The graphic evolution of the character from its origin to the birth of its “other”, organized by the Astorina publishing house, documents the mutations of Diabolik through the display of original drawings and many color reproductions.
Giorgio Cavazzano. A life among the ducks is a lavish exhibit dedicated to the most important living Disney designer.
Bruno Bozzetto. West and Soda, half a century after its release, celebrates a masterpiece of cinema animation , i.e. the art that maintains the closest ties of kinship to the comic.
Scòzzari Says is a retrospective on Filippo Scòzzari, among the founders of epoch defining magazines such as “Frigidaire” and an essential protagonist of the last forty years of Italian comics.
Jordi Bernet. Chiara, Torpedo & Co., organized in collaboration with Stefano Bartolomei, is a comprehensive display of original drawings by a recognized master of international comics.
Karel Thole. Creator of Universes is an anthology of the greatest fantasy illustrator of all time.
Top 100 focuses on another important reality of the universe of comics, that of collecting, presenting in chronological order 100 collectible comics that, from Corriere dei Piccoli to Spiderman, have made publishing history in Italy.
